ARME ARME REICHE REICHE (2025)

📅

24.01.-02.02.2025

📍

Lichthof Theater (Hamburg)

Hamburg is both the city and the federal state with the highest number of millionaires — and even some billionaires — in Germany, while also facing a very high poverty risk of 19.5%. This coexistence, as a reflection of a global trend, is the starting point for ARME ARME REICHE REICHE.

Two authors have conducted in-depth research on poverty and wealth in Hamburg and Germany, each creating a distinct piece. For REICHE REICHE, Dagrun Hitze carried out numerous interviews with people affected by wealth to explore the potential links between happiness, fortune, justice, and society. Sean Keller’s ARME ARME, on the other hand, is about everyone: long, small, tall, skinny, old arms. Working poor, homeless poor, invisible poor. And when things start getting too sentimental or dangerously close to social romanticism, the invisible hand of the market delivers a proper slap.

In the first part of the evening, three performers investigate the theme of “wealth” through movement patterns inspired by social dances of the past and present. The second part dives into the lives of people experiencing poverty, using ever-changing artistic approaches and contrasting theatrical means. It highlights how poverty is systemically rooted—and persists.
